Jim Crow didn’t make a sudden comeback in 2026—the GOP just finally stopped pretending he ever left.

The Secretary of Defense just purged the second Black Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff without providing a shred of military justification. The President is waging a relentless campaign to illegally oust the first Black woman on the Federal Reserve Board using fabricated mortgage smears. The Smithsonian’s African American history museum has been placed under federal review for failing to meet a political loyalty test of “Americanism.” ICE has ramped up street raids in majority-Black and brown neighborhoods at eleven times the previous rate. And to top off the classy ambiance, White House communications staffers thought it was a brilliant idea to circulate videos mocking the Obamas as apes.

You’d be forgiven for assuming this was a dispatch from 1955 Mississippi or 1876 post-Reconstruction.

Fifty Years of Pure, Uncut Orange racism

Before we get to the current Klan rally, let’s dispense with the idea that any of this is a recent misunderstanding. When a man shows you who he is for more than five decades, it isn’t a “pattern”—it’s his entire identity.

1973: The DOJ sues Trump Management for stamping “C” for “Colored” on rental applications to keep Black tenants out of his buildings. Trump settles, admits nothing, and learns even less.
1989: Trump drops $85,000 on full-page newspaper ads demanding the death penalty for five innocent Black and Latino teenagers in the Central Park jogger case. When DNA evidence completely exonerates them and another man confesses, Trump spends the next thirty-five years doubling down on their guilt.
2011 to Present: He rode the birtherism conspiracy all the way to the Oval Office, told non-white congresswomen born in America to “go back” to their countries, and filled his cabinet with culture warriors whose primary qualification is white grievance.

This isn’t an evolution. This is just an old real-estate landlord with a lifetime of racial contempt who finally got enough institutional power to stop using coded language. Donald Trump is putting the White back in the White House.

The Modern Purge: “Merit” as a Plastic Cover Story

The historical playbook hasn’t changed; it just swapped out white hoods for executive orders and press briefings.

At the Pentagon, Pete Hegseth—a former Fox News personality confirmed by a razor-thin margin—kicked off his tenure by executing an ideological and racial sweep. He immediately fired General Charles Q. Brown Jr., the second Black chairman of the Joint Chiefs, purged the promotion rosters of qualified women and minority officers, and sacked the Army Chief of Staff for daring to ask why. Hegseth didn’t cite a single flawed combat performance or poor fitness review. His cover story was “restoring merit,” which translates in MAGA-speak to ensuring top leadership looks like a 1950s country club.

Meanwhile, over at the Federal Reserve, Trump decided to shatter over a century of central bank independence to target Dr. Lisa Cook—the Fed’s first Black female governor. Relying on flimsy mortgage allegations cooked up by political appointees at the FHFA, Trump tried to remove her. Even when the courts and the Supreme Court blocked his overreach, he turned right around and drafted another eviction notice.

Add in Executive Orders aimed at sanitizing the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History, stripping Juneteenth recognitions, and setting ICE loose with unchecked profiling authority, and the blueprint is unmistakable: erase Black history from the public square, remove Black leadership from regulatory power, and criminalize non-white existence.

The Inside Facilitator and the “Color-Blind” Shell Game

Of course, the entire enterprise relies on a few reliable cheerleaders to maintain the illusion of legitimacy. Enter Justice Clarence Thomas, a man who rode affirmative action straight through Yale Law School in the 1970s and has spent the last thirty years pulling the ladder up behind him. Thomas will eagerly gut the Voting Rights Act and declare affirmative action unconstitutional while claiming with a straight face that he “doesn’t have a clue what diversity means.”

The entire conservative sales pitch rests on the fraud of “color-blindness.” Enforcing a strictly “color-blind” rule on top of a deeply unequal economic foundation doesn’t create fairness—it permanently locks in historical advantages while slapping a legal seal of approval on the status quo.

They didn’t eliminate the poll tax; they just modernized it through disenfranchisement, gerrymandering, and selective enforcement.

The Unbroken Line

Every single time Black Americans make measurable political or economic gains—after Reconstruction, after the 1960s Civil Rights era, after the election of Barack Obama—the reactionary backlash arrives like clockwork: organized, well-funded, and deeply resentful.

The Jim Crow machine never vanished. It evolved from lynch mobs into mandatory minimums, from segregationist rallies into “anti-woke” administrative purges, and from courthouse roadblocks into slick executive orders.

Donald Trump didn’t build this machine. He just inherited it, cranked the dial to eleven, and packed his administration with sycophants eager to run it. They didn’t bring Jim Crow back to life in 2026.

They just finally stopped pretending he ever left.
