The Great Conservative Myth

Good morning. I want to start with a premise so many of us were raised to believe that questioning it feels almost blasphemous: that Republicans, whatever else you think of them, are the party of law and order. Tough on crime. Back the blue. Respect the badge. It’s a brand they’ve marketed since Nixon, and it worked because branding usually beats substance in American politics.

Let’s be honest, that is laughable, an historically illiterate idea that the Republican Party was ever, even for a single second, interested in actual “law and order.”

The phrase has never been more than a highly effective, focus-grouped dog whistle designed to justify state-sanctioned violence. From the moment Richard Nixon rode the phrase into the White House, “Law and Order” has meant exactly one thing: the preservation of a two-tiered system of power where wealth, status, and white privilege buy absolute immunity, while the full, crushing weight of a militarized police state is systematically unleashed on poor communities and people of color.

The corporate-state elite do not want order; they want compliance. They have spent the last fifty years building an expansive prison-industrial complex and shielding police departments from any form of civil accountability, all to protect the private property of the oligarchy from the very public they have systematically impoverished. Look at who actually gets the “law” and who gets the “order.” White-collar fraud that wipes out thousands of pensions gets a fine and a consulting gig. A kid with $40 of weed gets 10 years in prison and a record that follows him for life. The rule of law was never meant to apply to them—it was meant to be the whip they use to keep the rest of us in line.

The Masked Executioners of the Corporate State

If you want to see the terrifying, blood-soaked reality of this ideology in action, you only need to look at our streets today.

Over the past week, I.C.E. has carried out a series of brutal street-level killings that expose the agency as nothing more than a rogue, state-sanctioned militia. In Houston, Texas, agents shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo while he was on his way to work. Days later, in Biddeford, Maine, masked federal agents driving unmarked vehicles ambushed a car and executed 26-year-old Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero.

The horror of these killings is matched only by the sheer, unvarnished lawlessness of the operation. In the Maine shooting, local officials confirmed that Durán Guerrero—a young Hispanic man simply going about his day—was not even the target of the warrant the agents were attempting to execute. He was an innocent bystander. Yet, moments after stopping his vehicle, a masked federal agent opened fire and ended his life.

In Houston on July 7, ICE agents shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a man who’d lived in the city since the early 1990s, building homes for a living, in the process of getting his own work permit. Unmarked vehicles followed his van. Masked agents gave chase. He was shot in the torso and died at the hospital.

Three months earlier, in Patterson, California, ICE agents shot Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez during a stop. Same phrase: “weaponized his vehicle.” Dashcam footage shows agents surrounding his car with weapons already drawn before it moved an inch. Before that, in January, federal agents conducting immigration enforcement in Minneapolis fatally shot two U.S. citizens. This isn’t a pattern of isolated incidents anymore. It’s a script, and the punchline is always the same: an unarmed man is dead, and the agency investigating itself has already decided the verdict before the body’s cold.

The Department of Homeland Security immediately trotted out the exact same tired, post-execution script they use to cover up their crimes, claiming the victims “weaponized their vehicles”. It is the default, legally protected lie of a rogue police force.

We should not be surprised by these atrocities. This is an agency that has been flooded with billions in taxpayer dollars while systematically lowering its recruitment standards to the level of sewer sludge. They have actively recruited from the ranks of far-right militias, white nationalist groups, and disgraced ex-military personnel looking for a legal avenue to exercise their violent impulses on vulnerable populations. With agents explicitly refusing to wear body cameras, they operate in total shadow, carrying out extrajudicial executions in broad daylight without a shred of democratic oversight.

The Industrialized Murder Machine

These killings are not “isolated incidents” or the work of a few bad apples. The Trump administration has completely industrialized the deportation and detention apparatus, turning it into a hyper-profitable corporate meat grinder.

The Department of Homeland Security has instituted a mandatory nationwide quota of 2,000 arrests per day. This arbitrary, metrics-driven pressure has forced roughly 80% of ICE officers into active field operations, working seven days a week to hunt human beings just to hit their daily numbers.

When you attach a hard, commercial metric to human liberty, the systemic violation of constitutional rights becomes a mathematical certainty. ICE agents are dragging people out of their cars, raiding workplaces, and terrorizing neighborhoods not because of any genuine security threat, but to feed the insatiable appetite of the private prison industry. Multi-billion-dollar corporate giants like CoreCivic and the GEO Group, who posted a record $254 million profit last year, roughly eight times the year before, are actively expanding their footprints—such as converting shuttered prisons into massive new immigration holding camps—all because their stock prices and profit margins climb with every single warm body delivered to their cells. The state has quite literally financialized the kidnapping of our neighbors.

It wasn’t institutional decay, it was a design choice. To hit a hiring target of doubling ICE’s workforce, the administration removed the upper age limit for recruits entirely, dropped the minimum age to 18, scrapped the college degree requirement, and slashed academy training from thirteen weeks down to six. Senator Dick Durbin’s office has documented recruits who could barely read, who failed drug tests, who showed up with gang and white-supremacist tattoos, some with pending criminal charges — all rushed onto American streets carrying federal arrest authority and a firearm. You do not accidentally end up with agents killing unarmed citizens in traffic stops. You get there by advertising for “patriots,” skip the vetting, and then handing them a badge, a mask, and an unmarked car.

The DOJ Hitman in the Oval Office

This systemic lawlessness requires a highly coordinated, top-down cover-up, and the administration has installed the perfect architect to manage it.

Enter Todd Blanche, the former personal defense attorney for Donald Trump who has been elevated to Acting Attorney General of the United States. This appointment is the ultimate betrayal of the Department of Justice’s stated mission. Blanche is not a servant of the American public; he is a personal fixer, a political hitman installed to transform the federal justice system into an explicit weapon of executive retribution.

The corruption of Blanche’s tenure is staggering. This man has already served as deputy AG and acting AG, during which time the department indicted Trump’s political enemies, opened an investigation targeting the writer who successfully sued Trump for sexual abuse, and oversaw the DOJ’s handling of the Epstein files so badly — leaving victims’ names and images unredacted, “duplicating” and withholding millions of pages — that more than 1,200 former DOJ employees signed a letter begging the Senate not to confirm him. He decimated the parts of the DOJ that were created to protect the American people from corporate fraud and abuse. He built and then oversaw the collapse of a nearly $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund,” tied to a settlement a federal judge said should never have survived judicial review — the same judge who referred Trump’s attorneys for sanctions and flagged Blanche’s own testimony to the New York bar as potentially misleading.

Todd Blanche has turned the Department of Justice into a private security firm for the executive branch, leaving the rest of the country completely unprotected from corporate predation and state-sponsored violence.

Exporting Death: Palestine, Iran, and the Alliance of Terror

The cruelty, corruption, and absolute lawlessness of this administration do not stop at our borders. The Trump administration is actively exporting this brand of violent fascism across the globe, directly instigating catastrophic conflicts and giving open permission to violent foreign regimes to carry out historic atrocities.

Nowhere is this more starkly visible than in the Middle East. The administration’s aggressive, imperialistic posturing has plunged us right back into a hot war with Iran, bombing civilian infrastructure, driving regional instability, and creating massive, highly profitable disruptions in the global energy markets.

Simultaneously, Trump’s primary geopolitical partner in this campaign of organized murder, Benjamin Netanyahu, continues to wage a devastating campaign against the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank. This is a textbook example of a lawless state using American military hardware and political protection to execute systemic ethnic cleansing.

The lawlessness has reached such a fever pitch that armed, illegal Israeli settlers—actively backed and joined by Israeli military forces—regularly attack Palestinian villages and destroy schools, olive orchards, and even churches. They are carrying out these violent raids even on land officially owned by U.S. citizens, secure in the knowledge that the White House will never hold them accountable.

The most depressing aspect of this international tragedy is the complete and total complicity of the Democratic Party establishment. Rather than standing up for basic international law or human rights, corporate Democrats have happily pocketed millions in campaign donations from right-wing lobbying groups like AIPAC, choosing to turn a complete blind eye to these atrocities. With only a few brave exceptions, the political class has agreed to let the slaughter continue as long as the checks keep rolling in.

Join the Resistance

The system is not just broken—it has been completely captured. From the streets of Maine to the West Bank of Palestine, the corporate-fascist alliance has made its intentions clear: they will use the absolute power of the state to crush any person, any law, and any constitutional right that stands between them and total dominance.

But we must not let their violence paralyze us. Now is not the time to retreat into comfortable apathy or wait for a cowed, corporate Democratic Party to save us. Now is the time to organize, to build mutual aid networks, to protect our neighbors, and to disrupt their managed march into executive autocracy. The rule of law may be dead in Washington, but the spirit of resistance is alive in our communities. Stand up, make some loud and unmanageable trouble, and let’s take our future back.
